About the Author/Owner

I started J-Fish.com in 2025 as a follow-on to my work from January of 2009 through December 2024 as the Japan reporter for SeafoodSource.com. In that position, I was additionally tasked with covering the tuna regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs) and the octopus market worldwide. I also covered the FOODEX show, and the Japan International Seafood & Technology Expo shows in Tokyo and Osaka.

Outside of my work for SeafoodSource, I offer consulting services. For example, I was commissioned to research and write two market reports on yellowtail (Seriola species)—on Japan and for the world market—by aquaculture companies in Australia and Spain, respectively.

About the Site

J-Fish has four main sections: news (press releases, partial translation and analysis of news from Japanese sources, and original reporting) market data (Toyosu prices), and market reports/white papers. The site is currently in a “build in public” phase—articles are being posted, and price data is posted. Currently, I'm updating Toyosu prices periodically manually; I aim to automate it for real time updates.

So, how will this site be different from SeafoodSource? It is Japan-specific and more data driven. I want to include details that will make it as useful as possible to seafood professionals, researchers, sustainability groups, investors and policymakers. I’ll point the reader to additional links and data sources whenever possible. This may make it less readable for a general audience. For example, if I know exactly how much of a product was imported or exported, I will give the exact number rather than a rough rounding. If there are extra details I think professionals should know, such as the spec details, I will give them.

Companies, government agencies and NGOs are invited to share press releases and product news for consideration.

There are currently no ads. When the site is out of the construction phase, a Media Kit for potential advertisers will be added.
